Chapter Fifteen
Celine, Cara, and I hovered in the water, our eyes barely above the surface, scanning the horizon for the intrusive noise.
âAh, we have to go,â Arlana said with a scoff at our sudden defensive stance. âThatâs my alarm.â She flitted her tail at us and ambled to where the mound of clothing lay near the water.
âAlarm for what?â Celine asked as she followed.
I followed too, trying to pull Caraâs attention in a new direction, away from David and the rocks. It workedâshe swam directly behind me.
âI set the alarm on my phone. The sun will set soon and we still need to clean up our mess from movie day.â
When we neared the edge of the lake, Arlanaâs fins retracted smoothly along the sides of her tail. Her blended light pink scales made it harder to see the transformation on her skin compared to my other sisters. But I still noticed the scattered line of scales melt away as though someone had taken an eraser to her torso and erased the shimmer. As her color dulled, her tail pulled apart, separating into two pale legs. Arlana didnât so much as flinch when her tail separated; she simply continued waving her legs in unison back and forth.
When she made it to the shore, she crawled up the pebbles, only having to expose her back to the outside air, before checking to make sure we were alone. âWeird,â she said as she stood naked along the shore and held her shirt over her head. âI smell humans, but there are none here.â
I frozeâ¦for two reasons. One: she scented David. And two: David had more than likely just heard her refer to humans as though she were nothing of the sort. We were nothing of the sort.
âItâs a good thing we brought the car.â Arlana pulled her pants up as the now naked Celine and Cara shook out their clothes. âCan you imagine how out of place weâd look walking down the street with dripping hair this time of year? Weâd have to pretend to shiver.â
âUh, I hate pretending to shiver,â Celine said as her black shirt made its way over her head.
Arlana, Celine and Cara turned their focus to me, still gently waving my tail to keep afloat. I figured if I lagged a little, Arlana would want to leave me behind in an effort to stay on schedule. I needed to stay long enough to try to explain away what had just happened to David.
âAre you coming?â Arlana asked, already headed toward the dock to grab her shoes, socks, and cell phone. Out of all my sisters, Arlanaâs reactions stayed consistent to her main priority: order.
âI still need to get that book from the library,â I answered, trying to sound more relaxed than I felt.
âOh, you havenât done that yet?â Arlana slipped her shoes on. âWhat about your wet clothes? You canât go to the library like that.â
Celine and Cara stood dressed, waiting between the dock and the bush.
âI have a set of dry clothes in my bag.
